[synopsis] => “A Modern Slavery” is a book written by Henry Woodd Nevinson, first published in 1906. The book is an investigative report on the forced labor system in Portuguese Africa, specifically in Angola. Nevinson, a journalist and social reformer, traveled to Angola in 1905 to gather information about the forced labor system that was prevalent there. In the book, Nevinson describes the cruel and inhumane treatment of the African people who were forced to work on the plantations and in the mines. He exposes the corruption and greed of the Portuguese colonial administration that allowed such a system to flourish, and the complicity of European companies that profited from the exploitation of African labor. Nevinson's writing helped to bring attention to the issue of forced labor in Africa and contributed to the growing movement for African independence in the early 20th century. "A Modern Slavery" is considered a classic work of investigative journalism and an important piece of African history.
